Apostle Islands: 2011
In 1970, 20 of the 22 Apostle Islands and a portion of the mainland of the Bayfield Peninsula in Wisconsin were designated as a National Lakeshore. The islands, which generally are around 3 miles apart, are spread out over 600 square miles of Lake Superior. They can only be visited by boat.
In July, I reunited with five other river-boating buddies from the 70's for a sea kayaking tour of the Apostles. We spent a week crossing from one island to the next, visiting sea caves and light houses, dodging a storm or two, and camping on some of the islands. We visited 13 of the islands.
