Thinking Like an Island
Sustainability Lessons from Hawaii for Spartanburg
Hawaii is a rare and special place, in which beauty and isolation combine to form a vision of paradise. That isolation comes at a price: resources are strained and expensive. Today, Hawaii is experiencing a surge of new strategies making living in the islands more ecologically, economically, and socially resilient. We will use the collection of case studies in the text “Thinking Like an Island: Navigating a Sustainable Future in Hawaii” as the basis to explore Hawaii’s sustainability initiatives.
Greg Farley, editor of the text, will join us as we explore sustainability efforts on the islands first-hand, via a 19 day tour of 3 Hawaiian Islands: Oahu, The Big Island, and Kauai. Students will reflect on and apply components of Hawaii’s sustainability efforts to create their own theoretical urban sustainability models addressing real world issues in our local community, ideally within the Northside area of Spartanburg.
