Race and Gender in Star Trek

Course Description

Star Trek, created in 1966 with a utopian vision of the future, has evolved and changed along with American culture, projecting the hopes, fears and ideologies of the last sixty years. In this interim, we will explore two themes to which Trek has returned again and again: race and gender. Students will watch episodes from seven different Star Trek television series and two films, and read essays reflecting on the ways in which Star Trek has promoted and challenged these themes over the decades

Course Requirements

  • Class Attendance
  • Reading seven essays on Star Trek before coming to class on the dates assigned
  • Full participation in the class discussion, including talking about assigned readings
  • Individual course project, including list of references and summary

Grading Breakdown:

  • Class Participation and Attendance (see handout on Moodle for calculation details): 50%
  • Project: 50%
